Recreation in Radford

Spare time is easy to fill when you live in Radford. Fishing, tubing, and boating are popular on the New River. Guided fishing trips, canoe and kayak rentals, as well as inner tubes and shuttles are available right in the city from Tangent Outfitters.

The Lower New River Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail has 4 of its 14 hotspots right in the city.

Claytor Lake is nearby, with a pristine swimming area, wooded trails, and great boating, fishing and camping.

The Appalachian Trail and Jefferson National Forest are just half an hour away.

Spectator sports including basketball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse and tennis are held at the university´s 78 acre Dedmon Center.

The new Radford Recreation Center is free to residents. Racquetball, basketball, an indoor walking and running track, workout machines, and weight lifting are available. Classes in tai chi, yoga, and aerobics are also offered each month. These have fees, but there is no long-term commitment. You´re allowed to try any class free. Radford Transit buses stop at the Rec Center between 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM

The Radford Senior Center is located at the Rec Center, and offers camaraderie, Wii games, fitness classes, bus trips, meeting space, and a seniors-only gym.

The Recreation Department also directs football, soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball leagues, sponsors environmental education programs at the Outdoor Classroom, and manages city parks, ball fields, and tennis courts.

Shelor Motor Mile Speedway is on Route 11, a couple of miles away from Radford.  It holds NASCAR sanctioned Late Model Stock Car, Limited Sportsman, Street Stock, and Mod4 races from April through November, and makes an exciting outing for the whole family.

Adjacent to the oval track is a dragstrip.

The New River Valley has a golf course for every day of the week!  The Pete Dye River Course has breathtaking vistas of the river from all 18 holes.  It is a semi-private, daily fee facility open to the public and serves as home for the Virginia Tech championship golf team.

Another golf course, south of town near Riner, is Auburn Hills.

Radford's Riverway provides walking and biking access to Bisset Park and the New River from Main Street, several residential neighborhoods, and the university.  Bisset Park is a great place for meeting friends, playing Frisbee, kite flying, sunbathing, learning to ride a bike, and picnicking.
