Radford VA: The Heart of the New River Valley
It´s the New River City!
The city of Radford is a quiet, safe, and walkable community of approximately 9.63 square miles. It is well known as a great place to raise a family. Older children can walk or ride bikes to the park, library, after-school lessons and appointments. The playing fields are next to the schools, and every neighborhood has a park. Radford Transit provides bus service throughout the area including the Radford University Campus. The city is within a short drive of Christiansburg and Blacksburg. Roanoke is less than an hour away.
We have a sense of place!
"Radford is on the New River, an old river that gathers near Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, and flows defiantly north. While the tracks follow the river, the town was laid out on a terrace above it. Once called Lovely Mount, Radford rests in a great limestone valley between the Blue Ridge and a group of narrow elongated mountains called the Blue and Valley Appalachians." This description is by Rick Van Noy in A Natural Sense of Wonder.
The New River is an American Heritage River. Both the river, and Connolly´s Run, a stream flowing between the east and west sides of the city, have become parkland that is a focus and inspiration for residents. Many miles of trails throughout the heart of the city and along the river itself are already in use, and more are planned. Walking, biking, and trail running are popular throughout the year.
If you like to be outdoors, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, or exploring trails, living in the New River City will come naturally. Don´t worry about flooding, as the businesses and homes are located well above the river.
The city even owns a shared use area at the end of Peterson Drive near I-81 Exit 105, where mountain biking, hiking, and hunting are allowed. Just ask for more information and a permit at the Radford city office building at 619 Second Street.
Information about the trails in Wildwood and Bisset parks is available from Pathways for Radford.
We make things here!
Radford is a place where people learn, teach, and make things. Respect for education and pride in American made products gives the community its identity.
Castings, motors, polystyrene products, and industrial pallets are made in the city. Radford is home to a highly skilled workforce. Workers have the convenience of the Workforce Development Center at New River Community College, where updates to vocational and technical skills are available. Many graduates of Virginia Tech and Radford University are eager to raise their families in the stimulating environment of the New River Valley.
A number of attractive industrial properties along the Norfolk Southern line, and a 50-acre municipally owned industrial park, convenient to I-81 await innovative businesses. The biotechnology firm, Techlab is relocating it's manufacturing plant here from Blacksburg in 2011.
The city offers extensive assistance to companies locating here.
Companies locating here will find things fall into place very quickly. The stage is set!
Radford is planning its future!
The city recently updated its Comprehensive Plan, providing a vision for the future. Major themes include identifying and implementing "Green Infrastructure" initiatives that will protect the natural character of the city; diversifying the tax base through residential, commercial and industrial development with significant redevelopment opportunities; beautifying the entire city and instilling pride throughout the community; and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents, students, tourists and businesses.
Many additional planning documents are available, and make excellent reading for prospective residents.
