Radford University (RU) is the city´s largest employer, and prepares about 9,000 students in fields such as business administration, accounting, communication, nursing, education, and the arts.
Recently RU obtained approval from the State Council of Higher Education to establish four new graduate level programs. All are in medical fields predicted to be in high demand in coming years: Masters of Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Psychology in Counseling Psychology, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Doctor of Nursing Practice.
The performing arts at RU have a sophisticated new home. The Covington Center opened at RU in 2008, with a 350-seat performance hall, rehearsal rooms, teaching studios, a music media center, and art gallery.
Just 20 minutes away in Blacksburg, the state´s largest university, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) offers nationally acclaimed programs in engineering, architecture, agriculture, physics and other graduate and undergraduate disciplines. Tech offers 60 bachelor's degree programs, and 140 master's and doctoral degree programs. The 30,000 full-time students at Tech have a 16:1 student-faculty ratio.
The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center is located adjacent to the main campus. It consists of more than 130 companies with approximately 2,000 employees. It offers opportunities for businesses to establish close working relationships with the university and nurtures entrepreneurs with new inventions and developments.
Recently Carilion Clinic joined with Virginia Tech to develop a new medical school to be located on the Roanoke campus of the Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTC)
Also in Blacksburg, the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepares osteopathic primary care physicians to care for the rural and medically underserved areas of the Commonwealth of Virginia, North Carolina and the Appalachian region.
New River Community College in nearby Dublin, provides training programs for business and industry, as well as associate degrees in technical and general education.
